NO INFRASTRUCTURE FUNDING FOR PORT THEATRE STUDIO
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE THE PORT THEATRE: October 1st; Nanaimo, BC. The Board of Directors and staff of The Port Theatre were notified early this week that the Society will not be receiving any funding from Build BC towards the Studio Theatre Project.
President James Whiteaker said “We are disappointed that we were unable to bring this infrastructure funding to Nanaimo to create local jobs and boost the local economy when it needed most. The Port Theatre Society was ready to maximize this rare opportunity for major federal and provincial funding for a community facility.”
General Manager Bruce Halliday said “The Studio would have been a dynamic performance venue for local, regional and national artists from all disciplines. Audiences would have been able to experience performances that are best served in an intimate, professional, flexible and comfortable space. Many people from the local arts community will be keenly disappointed that the Studio will not be available for their performance and production requirements.”
The Studio Theatre/rehearsal hall was identified as a community need in the 1986 during the consultation process that determined the size, location and operating model of The Port Theatre. The Port Theatre Society will review any current opportunities and determine the best course of action for the future to achieve its goal of having an intimate performance space.
