A
visit with Marion Watkins-
by Sandra Thomson

During
the 1950's Marion was invited to join the
Nanaimo Symphony Auxiliary. She make coffee
for their Sunday rehearsals. Marion says
"
I got the idea that it must be fun to play
together like that so I asked the conductor,
Maurice Kushner, if he couldteach me violin
- he said he didn't think so, but
maybe he could teach me to play viola. So
I started lessons with Maurice, joined the
amateur orchestra and never looked back!"
In the mid 1970's Marion's
friend and neighbor, Joyce Horner, suggested
that she study with Marlin Wolfe at the newly
formed Vancouver Island Music School.While
taking lessons from Marlin, Marion learned
that he was also a conductor. She remembers
thinking of the Nanaimo Symphony..."Some
day this will end. We'll get a professional
orchestra and I'll do the office work, 'cause
I'm much better at that than at playing!"
In the early 1990's that's exactly what happened.
When the Vancouver Island Symphony was formed,
their office was in Marion's spare bedroom
for two years! In recognition of her valued
service to the VIS, she was made and Honorary
Life Member. Her friend, Joyce, was also on
the member- ship committee for the Harbourfront
Centre Theatre project, which became The Port
Theatre.
Marion began volunteering for The Port Theatre
in 1990 and became more involved when the
theatre project office moved to the CIBC building
on Commercial Street in 1995.
When the Theatre opened in 1998, she volunteered
in the office and as an usher, until the spring
of 2004. Marion is still involved with the
Theatre as editor of the Volunteer Newsletter.
You'll often see her enjoying the Symphony
concerts and other events at the theatre she
helped build. She'll be sitting in Row L,
Seat 8: the seat that she and her late husband
Floyd sponsored.

2000 Hours!
"Time
is Priceless" reads the inscription
on the clocks gifted to Doris Arndt
and Helmut Neumann
to commemorate their 200 hours of volunteer
service to The Port Theatre. Doris never leaves
the Theatre unhappy and Helmut still feels
a sense of excitement before every show. It
is a pleasure and an honour to work with Helmut
and Doris as often as we do!
